Google Groups: replies keep landing back in the group instead of going to the customer

Your message has been posted to hello@yourdomain.com
The conversation shows your reply as a new group post; the customer never received it.

What's actually happening

Collaborative Inbox threads keep the group's own address in the reply chain. When a teammate hits reply, Gmail's default “reply to group” posts the answer back into the group — every member gets a copy, the thread looks answered, and the customer is not on the recipient list at all.

The fix

  1. Open groups.google.com as a group owner and go to Group settings.

  2. Under Email options, find Post replies to and set it to Sender of the message (not Entire group).

  3. Under Member moderation, check members reply as themselves, not as the group, unless you've deliberately set up “post as group”.

  4. In each teammate's Gmail, when replying to a group thread, check the To: field actually shows the customer's address before sending.

Careful: Even configured correctly, nothing in Groups shows that a colleague is already replying — two people can still answer the same customer minutes apart. Groups has no read or typing signals to give you.

Still not working?

If replies still post to the group, the member replied to the group's copy rather than the original. Ask the team to reply from the thread's newest message and confirm the To: line. Google's own docs cover the remaining cases under “Collaborative Inbox”.

This class of problem — replies going sideways, nobody knowing who's answered — is the reason Bosun exists. It shows who's read and who's typing on every thread.
